What Is a Lobectomy?

Individuals who have been diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer and are recommended for surgery will often speak with Dr. Brevetti about the possibility of undergoing a lobectomy. This procedure involves the surgical removal of cancerous tissue from the lungs and is associated with very low risks if performed using minimally invasive technologies such as the da Vinci® surgical system.

During a lobectomy, Dr. Brevetti will begin by making a few small incisions under the ribs before proceeding to insert a small video camera and surgical instruments into these new incisions. Guided through the surgery by the images on the computer monitor, Dr. Brevetti will work carefully to remove the tumor or affected tissue from the lung. Once all target areas have been addressed and clean margins are made, the surgical site will be scanned for any signs of bleeding before the patient’s incisions are closed and the surgery is completed.
